Florence is often credited for its architectural beauty. The marble statues, Renaissance paintings, and preserved streets. Beyond the museums and views, however, Florence is also a living city. It’s shaped every day by the people who arrive, settle, struggle, learn, and build new lives here. It’s in this Florence that Anelli Mancanti exists..
Tucked away on Via Palazzuolo, Anelli Mancanti is a volunteer-run organization that creates connections and helps fellow Florentines. Gli Anelli Mancanti has been active in Florence for over 25 years, becoming a fixture for citizens and newcomers. Their mission statement is clear: interculturality is something practiced daily through listening, learning, and mutual respect.

Language as a Bridge
At the heart of Anelli Mancanti is its Italian language school for foreigners, which has been running for over two decades. Language is often the first barrier people face when arriving in a new country. Without it, everything becomes harder: finding work, navigating bureaucracy, forming relationships, even asking for help. What I find different about these particular Italian classes are not seen as an academic hurdle but as a tool for integration, setting them apart from others.
.
Courses are offered at multiple levels, from complete beginners (including those learning to write in Latin characters) to advanced speakers looking to practice and gain fluency. Classes are intentionally affordable, costing just a few euros per month, making them accessible to people who might otherwise be excluded from formal language education. Learning Italian, to them, does not just mean memorizing grammar. It means gaining access to jobs, services, friendships, and everyday life in Florence!

Support Beyond the Classroom
Life brings complications, and many of the people who come through Anelli Mancanti helps them navigate legal, medical, or economic uncertainty. The organization offers a wide range of free help desks, each tailored to specific needs. The Legal Desk, for example, provides out-of-court assistance with issues such as residence permits, family reunification, work contracts, and citizenship applications.
.
Beyond practical support, their Theatre Workshop showcases a way to immerse yourself in language while practicing creativity and expression.

All of this support is offered with a focus on respect and trust. Problems are handled outside of court through conversation and guidance, rather than judgment. Everything they offer, from language classes to legal support, is designed to be affordable, human-centered, and open to everyone. Importantly, the entire organization is run by volunteers.

The People Behind the Work

None of this would be possible without volunteers. Before getting involved, volunteers participate in training days that introduce them to the organization’s values and procedures. In a city globally known for its past, Gli Anelli Mancanti is equally and deeply invested in Florence’s present and future.
Anelli Mancanti offers additional health and bureaucratic counseling resources. For those curious about getting involved, there are many ways to connect: volunteering, taking a language course, attending a workshop, or simply spreading the word. Gli Anelli Mancanti is open by design, and its doors are always meant to lead somewhere shared.
